Valtimo Orthodox church

Valtimon ortodoksinen kirkko

The Orthodox church of Valtimo lulls you to relax with its magnificent milieu. Inspired by the 12th century, the church has a mysterious and dim atmosphere around it so you can delve into prayer in peace or quiet down in the middle of everyday life. You can practically feel the serenity that exudes around with your every fiber.

In addition to their atmospheric milieu, the church’s icons will leave their own lasting impression on you. The icons painted by icon painter Harri Stefanius with his own unique style are based on 12th-century frescoes, and their compositions represent a new kind of style. There are also no painted frames on the icons because the painter wanted the prayer to be close to the holy man or event. The five largest icons of the iconostasis were painted by the artist Martta Nieglik-Platonoff.

Originally built as a tsasouna between 1959-1660, the building was converted and consecrated into a church in 2005 by Archbishop Leo. The prayer room was consecrated as the church of the Holy Trinity.
