Valtimo Wooden School

In the 100-year-old primary school in Valtimo, you’ll no longer find exuberant students or stern teachers toiling on the schoolyard. Nowadays, the Wooden School, situated in the best location in Valtimo, is a school museum, and you can walk through its front door and take a trip back in time to the school of yesteryear!

The yellow-flowering Wooden School, the surrounding lake landscape, and the picket fence bordering the farms lull you into a historic, rustic-romantic atmosphere at first glance. The sense of history is deliberately carried on inside the Wood School, and the observant can hear every board and beam tell the school’s remarkable story. The noise of gym class in one hall, the banging of woodworking in another: the sounds and footprints left by the schoolchildren are visible in each room in their own funny way. You can also see old teaching equipment, which reinforces the sense of time travel to a school more than a hundred years ago. The artefacts have been transported to the Wooden School for a local history exhibition.

A wonderful summer theatre will also be set up around the Wooden School to entertain both you and the locals in Finland’s poetically beautiful summer! If you get hungry on the way, there’s also a summer café open at Puukoulu, which will serve as a common living room for locals and you alike. The summer café hosts exhibitions and events for visitors of all ages, so the younger crowd is sure to enjoy the school even on holidays.

So let the Wooden School whisper its unique story to you, and take an imaginative journey through time, alone or with your family! Open in summer Free admission!
