Traditional Karelian pie is a well-known Karelian pastry with a traditional rice porridge, barley porridge or mashed potatoes inside an unleavened crust. This delicacy originated in Northern and Transcarpathian Karelia and after the wars, the tradition was spread throughout the country by the evacuees. In 2003, Karelian pie was registered as a traditional product of the European Union.
