Museum of Tuprakuika

The Tuprakuikan Museum, an idyllic home museum owned by Reino Juutinen of Valtimola, takes its name from the story of the tupra, which refers to smoke. At least it’s not smoke on display, but historical artefacts dating back up to a hundred years. With a variety of farmhouse utensils, woodwork, tools for hewing, homemade decorative objects and newspaper cuttings, you can experience local history and atmosphere through every sense. To top it all off, there are over a thousand birds made of cardboard and shaped by nature itself, with only the heads themselves added for the finishing touches.

A guide is available at the museum every day of the year from 10-18, but it is advisable to call in advance. For those interested in outdoor activities and the beautiful surroundings of the museum, there is a 1.5 km loop of the Hurtan along the riverside from the museum grounds. The tour includes panels on the history of the area and a fireplace where you can stop by a campfire to enjoy the silence of nature or a picnic.

The same trip can be combined with a visit to the Tavikoski rubble mill, built in 1907. The old log mill is surrounded by a fireplace where you can brew a pot of coffee. Address of the mill: Pirttimääentie 28, Verkkojoki
