Nurmes Evangelical Lutheran church
The present Evangelical Lutheran Church of Nurmes is the fifth in its series, built between 1893 and 1896. The church was built in 1893 by Bertha Envald, the main builder, and Fr. Mieritz, the church emulates a late 19th-century Gothic style, the grandeur of which you will remember long after your trip.
So make your way to Nurmes Church, where you’ll find inside at least as impressive a display of art as the exterior and surrounding traditional landscapes. You can stop to study the history behind the Christ on the Cross altarpiece from 1913, which features brushstrokes by Väinö Hämäläinen. From the altarpiece you can move your gaze to the beautiful stained glass windows in the choir loft, painted by Ilmari and Seppo Launiksen in 1934. The 41-voice organ, completed in 1976, will also leave echoes of the church’s history on your ears that you won’t soon forget!
Nurmes Evangelical Lutheran Church has barrier-free access and parking is available right next to the church. If necessary, assistive devices such as wheelchairs are available. Read more about the history of churches at www.nurmeksenseurakunta.fi.
