Nurmes Orthodox church

Ortodoksinen kirkko

You can’t miss the main church of the Nurmes Orthodox Church as you walk in the city. The magnificent peak of the church, which rises to a height of 25 meters, easily stands out from the rest of the cityscape, and invites you to explore that attraction in more detail. Once there, you will find a church built during the reconstruction period from between 1958-1959, which represents the striking “angular” style of the era. The church, consecrated by Assistant Bishop Paul in 1959, is dedicated to the memory of the apostle Peter and Paul.

Within the church itself, you will be able to enjoy the silence and peace that exudes the Orthodox faith. While resting in the embrace of the church, you can admire the icons of the sanctuary, some of which may seem a little different from the usual icons. Indeed, the original icons of the iconostasis painted by the artist Voitto Marttinen represent the exceptional icon-painting style that was characteristic of the church’s construction period.

Other icons of the church have been obtained from many different places and donors. Your eyes may be lost to admire the large icons in the church hall, which come from the former main church in Korpiselkä. You can also study the icons painted by Kauko Rysä in the 1960s and the icons donated by the Nurmes iconic circle and Aino Meriläinen.

If you wish to calm down and participate in the mass, church services are held regularly, though not every weekend. Please, see more detailed schedules on the Nurmes Orthodox Church website.
