Buzzing ridges, towering dunes and breathtakingly beautiful lakes are the basic elements of Nurmes’ nature that you won’t be able to forget in a moment. You won’t find a place in Nurmes that isn’t close in one way or another to the pure nature of the region. The landscape, which has inspired many poets and artists, is best explored either on hikes in the hiking areas or by fishing in the mirror-clear waters of the Pielinen. Nature is an integral part of the Nurmes holiday, and it surrounds us on all sides.

Nature in Nurmes is varied, you’ll find untouched wilderness, rugged rock formations and lush green groves. Before you go hiking, check out the public rights of way

Favourite nature spots for families with children include the Joukon Trail, a trail about a kilometre long with a bird tower at the end, the Rantaraitti with a playground, beaches and attractions, and the Raesärkät with longer hiking trails with good rest stops.

The best views can be found from the Jurttivaara, overlooking a hilly landscape and the Toivontorni, with its miniature landscape like Koli.

Mountain biking destinations include the Ellu’s tour and Raesärkät. The Porokylä trails and the Kotilanvaara loop are also suitable for mountain bikers, with map markings available at outdooractive.com
